Succulents make great houseplants, not only are interesting to look at they’re also relatively low-maintenance too, making them great for the forgetful gardener. Whilst most succulent varieties are safe for dogs, some are actually toxic if eaten, with symptoms including (but not limited to) vomiting, lethargy, diarrhoea, incoordination and depression.

So if you’re a lover of both succulents and dogs (and have an overly-inquisitive pooch!) it might be best to err on the side of caution and opt for one of the following 9 low-maintenance succulents that are safe for dogs instead!

Plant family: Crassulaceae

Toxicity: Non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses.

Care: Water when soil is dry to touch. Remove dead leaves from the bottom of the plant as it grows. Ensure plant has access to plenty of light. Repot as needed.

Care: Thrives in full sun. Allow soil to dry-out almost completely between waterings, good drainage essential. Leaves drop naturally as a means of self-propagation.
